Something a bit different this week. I thought I’d try to show the development of painting in the hope that it might be amusing for people to see my version of the process. This is a fairly large piece,( 36 “x 40”).
The initial design of the image is worked up in one color, with the emphasis on placement and value. The color I choose influences the tonality of the image,in this case it is a warm grey. Every subsequent color will be seen in relation to this ground color.
Particularly at the start, I tend to work all over the image.I try to apply test patches to every area of the painting , guessing at the hue, intensity ,and value of each patch. As the picture progresses the areas of color are drawn together. I try to mix a number of slightly different notes in every area to maintain the vibrancy which occurs when different hues of close value are seen ,one against the other.
In Part 2, I’ll post subsequent stages in the evolution of this painting, for any who have not been confused, driven off , or put to sleep by this post.
